Firenze Sage: Mr. Checkpoint [drunk driving & social media]

Social media tells people ahead of time

As Memorial Day weekend gets underway, law enforcement is out in full force to crack down on drunk driving.

But SDSU grad Sennett Devermont, better known as “MrCheckpoint,” is also working overtime, publicizing through social media the locations and times of DUI checkpoints throughout San Diego and the rest of Southern California, including Orange, Riverside and Los Angeles counties.

Devermont uses Twitter, Facebook, his own website and text messages to get the word out to his tens of thousands of followers.

Firenze Sage: Well, don’t just sit there!! [move & live]

TV time shortens life
Sitting is the new smoking,” says Anup Kanodia, a physician and researcher at the Center for Personalized Health Care at Ohio State University‘s Wexner Medical Center.
As evidence, he cites an Australian study published in October 2012 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine that compared the two pastimes.
Every hour of TV that people watch, presumably while sitting, cuts about 22 minutes from their life span, the study’s authors calculated. By contrast, it’s estimated that smokers shorten their lives by about 11 minutes per cigarette.  More information

Firenze Sage: We’re broke but it’s ok…[Detroit]

The city of Detroit may be facing a deepening financial crisis but that hasn’t stopped four trustees of its public pension funds from spending $22,000 of retirement system funds to attend a conference in Hawaii this week.

John Riehl, a senior sewage plant operator and 34-year Detroit employee, is one of the four. The cost fell within continuing education guidelines set by the legislature, he said.

“It’s one of these things we trustees must do to stay on top of the field,” Riehl said. “It’s important that we participate in these conferences. The stakes are too high.”  More information.

Firenze Sage: Midnight terror recon [Boston water supply]

Water supply for Boston

BELCHERTOWN (CBS) – Shortly after midnight Tuesday, seven people were caught trespassing at the Quabbin Reservoir.

State Police say the five men and two women are from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore, and “cited their education and career interests” for being in the area. The men told police they were chemical engineers and recent college graduates.

The Quabbin, in Belchertown, is one of the country’s largest man-made public water supplies. Boston’s drinking water comes from the Quabbin and the Wachusett Reservoirs.

State Police say there were no warrants or advisories on any of the individuals and “there was no evidence that the seven were committing any crime beyond the trespassing.”

Firenze Sage; He rubbed me, he rubbed me not [Michael Jackson]

He rubbed me …
Wade Robson, who once took the stand to defend Michael Jackson against sexual molestation charges, now says the pop star sexually abused him for seven years.
‘He is now fighting for money from the Jackson’s estate and asking a probate court to allow him to file a late creditor’s claim against the estate, even though the deadline has passed for creditors to file such claims. The estate’s lawyer, Howard Weitzman, has dismissed Robson’s claims.

Another happy immigrant [Boston bombing suspect]

F_ _ _ America scratched into boat

As police searched for him, and as he lay bleeding in his boat hideout, Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev wrote “F*** America” on the side panel of the boat, police in Massachusetts told ABC News.

Officers said they also discovered the phrase “Praise Allah” on the boat’s side panels and several anti-American screeds, including references to Iraq, Afghanistan and “the infidels.”

Firenze Sage: We will look into it…[AP phone records]

AP phone records seized by Justice

Attorney General Eric Holder says he played no direct role in the Justice Department’s secret review of Associated Press phone records but called it part of an investigation into what he termed a grave national security leak.

Holder said he had removed himself from the matter because of congressional testimony he had given and his dealings with the news media.

The Justice Department secretly obtained two months of telephone records of AP reporters and editors.

Holder said federal prosecutors are looking into the matter.

Firenze Sage: All cultures equal [conversion = lashes & prison]

Lashes & 6 yrs prison for conversion

Saudi Arabia,   The father of a woman who fled Saudi Arabia after accepting Christianity says the sentence given the man responsible for the conversion isn’t “appropriate.”

That man, the Lebanese director of a company where the woman worked, has been sentenced to six years in prison and 300 lashes, Gulf News reported Monday.

“He has deprived us of our daughter and he must assume his responsibilities,” said the father, who was not named. “We will ask the court to keep him behind bars until our daughter comes home.”

The woman, known in Saudi media as “The Khobar Woman” in reference to the city where she worked, had been sentenced to six years in jail and 300 lashes. She has reportedly fled to Sweden.

The father said he hoped the Saudi Embassy in Sweden would work to return his daughter to Saudi Arabia.
