The garden is there for you and others who live in  Aptos, CA and near by communities  including  Watsonville,  Freedom, La Selva, Rio del Mar, Soquel,  Capitola and Santa Cruz,  CA  And, yes,  people from Scotts Valley are welcome also.  All are welcome!
Are you on holiday  visiting Aptos, CA?   Or near by areas?  Bring a bag lunch to  the garden.  Walk around. Find the garden by taking the Freedom exit off  Highway #1 and look for the California  Highway Patrol (CHP) office.  The garden is right next door at 10707 Soquel Drive in Aptos.

Do you want to garden and like to do so with others?  Garden plots at Aptos Community  Garden are still available. Call 831 688 5727 extension 2 and leave a message.  You will get a call back within 24 hours.  You can also stop by and look around to see which plots are still available. Plots with a small red flag indicate availability.  As of July, 2016  plots including  # 38, 47, 65, 67 72 and  24 are available.
And, do you like or at least tolerate gophers?    We have plenty of gophers  to share! And birds.  And,perhaps,  you may  see owls, hawks  and other critters.

Pope to Bishops: retire at 75! Bishop to Priests: retire at 70!
  Pope to Bishops:  Retire at 75 says Pope Francis to  Catholic  Bishops.
  But what say Catholic  Bishops to their Rocks (i.e., their Priests)?
  Bishop Garcia  says retire at 70 to pastor  at Resurrection Catholic Community in Aptos, California.  The laity were told 05/31/15.
But why does a Bishop — who can do his  duties until age 75 — tell a Priest  to retire at age 70?
 I  gather that there are  rock bottom  dogmas  that  Catholics must accept such as the Holy Trinity and the Virgin Birth.  Other issues are deemed  church doctrines  (e.g., the doctrine of ‘ limbo’ and  that priests are not allowed to  marry) and  these are  subject to change over time.  For example,  ‘the doctrine of limbo’ is no longer considered  valid and not preached from the pulpit.  And, Catholic priests did marry for the first 1000 years — just not for the last 1000.
And then there are church practices — such as not eating meat on Fridays.
 Where does mandatory  retirement age fall. What category?  Certainly not akin to the Virgin Birth.  And retirement age  does not sound like church doctrine.  So, mandatory retirement age must fall into the third category —  simply a church practice. And  modifiable by laity influence.

Aptos Psychologist: Two dead cops & Obama plays the Blame Game
Who and why were two good cops killed recently in Santa Cruz, CA? Remember the game of Clue? Who did it with what in what room? The game of Clue was acted out in Santa Cruz, CA. We know who. Why it happened will probably never be known. Dead men tell no stories.  The man who killed the two good cops was himself killed. As the game of Clue unfolds in Santa Cruz, CA the Blame Game continues to unfold in Washington D.C.
Who did it to our Butler and our Baker in Santa Cruz, CA with a gun outside a  home?  This is no kid game of Clue. Two good cops are dead.   Why?  Acts of a  person with explosive anger who slayed.  And, so  many  Santa Cruz  families and lives are torn.  A microcosm of national politics?   As the automatic budget cuts  kick in,  we have a Commander-in-Chief  and the Democrat party  who seek to  slay  with the Blame game. And the Blame game  bring pain:  Four days pay not five for military families. Felons  loosed from  prisons. Threats  of dire consequences. In 2014 let’s vote the Blame gamers out.  For now,  we mourn our  Butler and our  Baker.

Read her latest article below which quotes a satirical, imaginary letter to a Canadian group that sees no threat to freedom posed by radical Islam. The letter by British Freedom suggests that the Canadian group try out a new “Adopt-a-Jihadist” program. It’s doubtful that the politically correct or Santa Cruz progressives will get the humor.

“There are two ways to analyze the violent eruption of global terrorist attacks that have marked the past three decades: analyze the nature of the threat and the culture supporting it, or blame it all on the evils of Western colonialism and American militarism.
“The latter analysis is the choice of the “politically correct,” who say that terrorism is as rampant in the West as it is in the Muslim world. A truth check, however, will tell us that for every Western terrorist such as Timothy McVeigh, there are hundreds almost exclusively from the Muslim world.
“If colonialism is the villain of this piece, why do ideologues only talk about Western colonialism? Why ignore that Arab Muslims and European Christians suffered under 500 years of Ottoman Turkish colonialism well before Western colonization, and how about the Muslim world in Central Asia that suffered under both Russian Tsarist and Communist colonialism?
“Arabs themselves were dreadful imperialists 700-1000 A.D. and every land they conquered is still dysfunctional today, according to Harvard economics professor, Eric Chaney: “Democratic Change in the Arab World, Past and Present,” in the April 7 Economist and Fareed Zakaria in Time, April 7. Wherever Arabs conquered, bad governance and economic development remain smothered to our day. This is even true for countries temporarily conquered but not converted to Islam by the Arabs Spain, Portugal, Southern Italy.
“Islamist terrorism is not just aimed at the West revenge for colonization, but also at Thailand Buddhist; Muslim Indonesia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Saudi Arabia; and Nigeria, where jihadis murdered Christian church goers on Easter Sunday. Black slavery was an Arab business long before it was European.
“American deniers and apologists for Islamist terrorism have a colleague in Canada: Mira Blinkers, president of “Canadians-are-Under-No-Threat,” who has passionately denounced the treatment of “captive insurgents” her term for terrorists and thinks that they should not only be treated better, but should be integrated into Canadian society. “Ahmed Allah-Akbar you can just call him Ahmed is to be cared for pursuant to the standards you personally demanded in your letter of complaint. In other words, the standards which you and most people of your ideological persuasion demand of civilized democracies like Israel, but not of Islamic dictatorships.
“We understand that you plan to offer counseling and home-schooling. Be warned. Your adopted terrorist is extremely proficient in hand-to-hand combat and can extinguish human life with such simple items as a pencil or nail clippers. We advise that you do not ask him to demonstrate these skills at your yoga class or while you are piloting your Cessna aircraft. He is also expert at making a wide variety of explosive devices from common household products, so you may wish to keep those items locked up, unless you think that this might offend him. [Canada permits ruinous lawsuits against those who “offend” Islamists.]
“You will appreciate that Ahmed, as an Islamic fundamentalist, views females as a subhuman property without rights, including the right to refuse his sexual demands. This is a particularly sensitive subject for him and he has been known to show violent tendencies around women who fail to comply with the new dress code that he will “recommend” as more appropriate attire. I’m sure that, over time, you will come to enjoy the anonymity offered by the burka. Just remember that it is all part of respecting his culture and religious beliefs’ as described in your letter.”
The letter was signed by “General I. M. Perturbed.” A man after my own heart.

A bigger Safeway in Rancho del Mar shopping center is not better says a number of Aptos, CA residents.
A number of anti-Safeway expansion letters have appared in Santa Cruz County papers. And, as these letters are published they will also be published here.
Aptos Psychologist, who writes for Monterey Bay Forum, opposes the Safeway expansion. Monterey Bay Forum will assist local residents in Santa Cruz County to voice their opinions and also to network.

Aptos Psychologist: Safeway ruined a Sebastopol, CA neighborhood & seeks expansion in Aptos, CA
Safeway ruins California neighborhoods, writes Gloria Sams who witnessed the expansion of Safeway in Sebastopol, CA.
Now Safeway plans to expand in the Rancho del Mar shopping center in Aptos, CA. If their plans are approved, Safeway will remove many of the small businesses including Le Chef (cooking tools), the movie theater and a number of other small businesses.
Gloria Sams Letter is published below.
“I can attest to Safeway ruining neighborhoods all the way back to the ’70s in Sonoma County where they and Bank of America, under false names, bought up an entire block in Sebastopol.
“They [Safeway] took the art deco theater, a large, family-run nursery, numerous small businesses on that block, plus caused the demise of every business with a two-block radius. They touted “lower prices” because they bought in volume, and then their prices went up.
“The businesses they brought in were no asset to the community. They continued these practices throughout that county [Sebastopol, CA] and just kept going.

In my view, Aptos does not need a bigger Safeway. There is currently plenty of parking and a variety of local businesses. It is my understanding that the Planning Commission must approve Safeway’s plans so it’s time that Santa Cruz residents speak up. Use YELP to publicize that we like what we have for small businesses.

Aptos Psychologist: Bigger is not better [Safeway to double in size in Aptos, CA]
Big box Safeway plans to double in size from 30,000 to 60,000 square feet at their Aptos, CA store located in Rancho del Mar shopping center just off #1 at State Park Drive.
Why? Bigger is not better for the existing Aptos, CA community.
Safeway recently bought the entire Rancho del Mar shopping center.
There’s plenty of parking now and no need for a double decker parking garage. The Rancho del Mar center has the only movie theater and the only ACE hardware store between Watsonville [9 miles south] and 41st Avenue in Capitola [3 miles north] Both the theater and ACE hardware will be eliminated if Safeway expands as planned. As local Aptos users know, ACE is the place for excellent services from the time you enter the door.
It’s likely that many small businesses [a movie theater, a jewelery store, a pharmacy, several restaurants, Ace hardware] will be eliminated if and when Safeway expands from 30,000 to 60,000 square feet.
Susan Houghton is a contact person for Safeway. Per Houghton, it will take about 2 years to get permits and 2 years to build. Several letters to the editor of the Santa Cruz Sentinel express concern about the pending changes.
Where and how to speak up: Aptos, CA has a supervisor on the County of Santa Cruz Board of Supervisors. And there’s of course the Planning Department. Is there a disgruntled citizens department? You can subscribe to the RSS feed to get updates to this post.

The Word Shop: Come for books, discuss books & share cup of tea
Alliee DeArmond, with the help of many volunteers, operates  The Word Shop in Aptos, CA.  As of 2016, this book shop has been operating for 21 years.  831 688-6607  Monday – Fridays  10-6 most days.
Alliee recently applied to be on the Board of Directors for St. John the Baptist  Episcopal Church in Aptos, CA. Alliee write regularly for a newspaper.  Her column In the Spirit publishes in the Santa Cruz Sentinel.  Various activities related to books occur routinely at The Word Shop.
Quite an accomplishment for all the women and men who have been  involved.
Back in 2009  — when this post was first  written -there were Literary Parties.  What’s going on is always changing — but always about books.
“These Literary Parties are a real blast! We choose a genre–mystery this month–everyone brings a book or two in that genre and we take turns waving the books around and saying why we like them. Then people usually have comments and conversation ensues until I bellow, “next.” We’ve done one every month since January–usually somewhere between a half-dozen and a dozen folk crammed into our back room. Quite fun.”
