St. Luke the Physician Healing Prayer Service Liturgy

Sunday, October 15, 2017 —  10 am

St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church,

125 Cantebury Drive, Aptos, CA

The Roman Catholic Church and other major denominations venerate him as Saint Luke the Evangelist.   His feast day takes place on 18 October.

A lot of discussion of Martin Luther goes on during  October, 2017 at Christ Lutheran church in Aptos,  10707 Soquel Drive    because 500 years ago Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to a church door.  With the advent of the printing press — the Internet of the Middle Ages —  what started as theological and academic discussion lead to political reformation and  separation  from the  main body , i.e. the catholic church.

The following remarks are from Pastor Dale Sollom-Brotherton:

From the Pastor

Dear Friends,

“When we hear about the Reformation we usually think about theology. Luther’s 95 Theses were intended to start an academic debate within the church community, ultimately resulting in reforms within the church. Because of the printing press everyone got involved. Soon this theological and academic issue also became political and spread like wildfire, ultimately reforming the church only by separating from the main church body.

“Luther worked tirelessly to communicate this reformed theology to the general public in ways people could understand it. He translated the Bible (the whole thing, by hand!) into contemporary German, along with authoring numerous other publications. He also worked hard to make the music of worship contemporary, both to inspire and educate people.

“This musical effort was more radical than we might realize. Some of our “traditional” hymns started as beer-drinking songs (who knew!) or the equivalent of today’s Top 40 tunes. What we now call “Renaissance” music was the music of the day. If we were to do the same thing now we’d be using the tunes you’d also be hearing on iTunes, Spotify, and Pandora.

“Luther had a very high opinion of the power of music. “The person who sings once prays twice.”

I truly desire that all Christians would love and regard as worthy the lovely gift of music, which is a precious, worthy, and costly treasure given to mankind by God. The riches of music are so excellent and so precious that words fail me whenever I attempt to discuss and describe them…. In summa, next to the Word of God, the noble art
of music is the greatest treasure in the world. It controls our thoughts, minds, hearts, and spirits.”   Martin Luther

What is the International  Order of St. Luke? In the words of Rev. Hugh Bromiley:

“Welcome to OSL.  We are a collection of individual believers who come together to learn more of the healing love and power of the Lord Jesus and to let it be known that Jesus Christ heals.  We believe that Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever and that healing in his name is still available for us to receive, and to share with the people God puts in our path….

“We raise up groups, or chapters, of healing teams and develop centers of healing.  We offer healing conferences and provide opportunities for growth in understanding, knowledge and faith in God’s healing love and power…..

“We work together in an ecumenical, inter-denominational spirit.   People come to OSL from many nations to learn how Jesus sets captives free from sickness, opression and despair.  The dream is to see transformed people, make whole their families, churches, cities and nations.

“God bless you as you journey on this wonderful healing adventure.  In the name of Jesus Christ, The Rev. Hugh Bromiley,   National Director OSL
